King Anthurium (Anthurium veitchii) Care Guide
Anthurium veitchii, commonly known as the King Anthurium, is a striking tropical plant famous for its long, pendulous leaves with deeply embossed, rippled veins. With the right conditions, its foliage can grow impressively large, making it a standout addition to any plant collection.
Site Selection
-
Light: Bright, indirect light encourages healthy growth. Avoid harsh direct sunlight.
-
Temperature: 18–28°C is ideal. Protect from cold drafts.
-
Humidity: Aim for 70–85% humidity for optimal leaf development.
Soil Preparation
-
Use a chunky, airy aroid mix containing orchid bark, coco coir, perlite and sphagnum moss.
-
Choose a pot with excellent drainage and airflow around the roots.
Watering
-
Water when the top layer of the potting mix begins to dry.
-
Keep the mix lightly moist, but never waterlogged.
Fertilizing
-
Feed with a diluted, balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during active growth.
-
Flush the pot occasionally to prevent fertilizer salt buildup.
Pest and Disease Management
-
Inspect regularly for spider mites, thrips and mealybugs.
-
Maintain good airflow and avoid persistently wet roots.
Propagation
-
Propagation is usually done by dividing a mature plant with established roots and growing points.
-
Seed propagation is possible but takes considerably longer.
Maintenance
-
Provide enough space for its long, hanging leaves.
-
Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth and remove damaged foliage when necessary.
Toxicity
- Toxic to humans and pets if ingested because it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Growing Tip: Anthurium veitchii appreciates consistent humidity and excellent root aeration. Avoid compact, heavy soil, as healthy roots are essential for producing those spectacular rippled leaves.
